Shaving sometimes feels like an endless cycle. Especially when razor burn and cuts are getting in the way. According to new research from the University of California San Diego, the last few years have seen a major increase in shaving-related injuries entering the E.R. While most of these visits are due to grooming down there—it’s important to take the proper precautions when shaving any part of your body, be it your legs or bikini area.
We know razor blades are expensive and that conditioner in your shower might seem like a good shaving cream replacement, but to be safe, and for a better shave, take these tips form the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) into consideration.
  • Before you shave, wet your skin and hair to soften it. Taking a shower or
bath is a great way to soften your hair.
  • Always apply a shaving cream or gel.
  • Be sure to shave in the direction that the hair grows.
  • Change blades or throw away disposable razors after five to seven shaves to help
minimize irritation.
  • Shave lightly to prevent nicks. In places where hair grows in different directions and in hard-to-reach areas, such as underarms and the bikini area, pull the skin slightly, making it more taut and easier to shave.
  • Never try to shave off acne as it can make acne worse.
If shaving is just not your cup of tea, consider laser hair removal. Your doctor will use laser technology to permanently disable your hair follicles from producing strands in the future. Or there’s always waxing. What’s your preferred method for hair removal?
