Feed Your Face: Homemade Guacamole Body Scrub
Guacamole isn't just a tasty treat — it's good for your skin too! Try this recipe for a homemade body scrub that will smooth and soften skin.

If dry winter weather has left you with large scaly patches or “chicken skin” on the backs of your arms or the tops of your thighs, try scrubbing with a homemade sugar scrub. This is the one time that sugar can actually be good for your skin! If your skin is sensitive, use granulated white sugar for a finer scrub. Brown sugar and turbinado (Sugar in the Raw) have larger crystals, so they make a coarser scrub. You can save a bundle and stay completely natural by using ingredients that you may already have in your pantry, fridge, or garden. Here’s my recipe for a relaxing guacamole body scrub:
Relaxing Guacamole Body Scrub
1 cup sugar
1/4 cup mashed avocado
1 tbsp sour cream
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tbsp honey
A few drops of lavender, ylang-ylang, or your favorite essential oil
Stir ingredients together in a large bowl until well mixed. Use in the shower or bath to exfoliate elbows, knees, heels, or any dry, scaly areas. Rinse well. Be sure to use a drain trap to avoid clogging your drains. Avocado and olive oil both contain fatty acids to replenish your skin’s natural protective barrier. In fact, some of my patients with rashes such as eczema or “winter itch” prefer olive oil and other natural oils to soothe their sensitive skin because these oils don’t sting or irritate. Lavender and ylang-ylang are scents commonly used in aromatherapy — they've been shown to help you sleep more soundly. Consider adding a few drops of these oils if you scrub before bedtime. You can find essential oils at your local health food store, Whole Foods, or GNC.
